Finding Time, Part 1

“I wish I had more time”
“If I only had a few more hours in the day”
“I would have, but I’m just sooooo busy”
Have you ever said one of the above statements?
Chances are, if you’re a human, you definitely have!
Over the course of the next three posts, we’re going to break down the exact steps you should take to truly ‘Find More Time.’
Does this relate to your exercise, nutrition, and general fitness habits? Yep.
Can it apply to all areas of your life? Most definitely. Ultimately, that’s the lens from which I hope you view it from.
In today’s post, I’m going to write about auditing how you spend your time currently. After that, we’ll talk about finding (and fixing) small inefficiencies. Finally, we’ll wrap this up by teaching you how to remove the non-essentials.
Let’s start with this: the new ‘screen time’ function on the iPhone is one that paints a clear, and often sobering, picture of how much time we can waste. If you’re not sure what this is, and you have an iPhone, do this:

  1. Click on ‘Settings’
  2. Click on ‘Screen Time’
  3. Click ‘See All Activity’
  4. Weep silently in the nearest office closet

(If you don’t have an iPhone, there is no hope. Just kidding, I’m sure nearly all smartphones offer this option now.)
Most people, when confronted with the notion that there are certainly enough hours in the day to do the things they “wish they had time for”, will point to a long commute and work day. Perfect, time it.
To really perform a time audit, we should probably answer a few questions:
How long is your commute? How many hours are you at work?
Stay at home mom or dad? How often are you running the kid shuttle?
Work from home? Are you productive or busy?
For all groups above, when you are home – how much ‘Netflix and Chill’ are you enjoying?
If you are guesstimating all these numbers, I guarantee you are underestimating. Kinda like when people are asked about their food intake. If you aren’t weighing and measuring, you don’t actually know how much you are eating.
So what should you do? Use a stopwatch and write down how long you spend time on all the “things of life” that you do on a daily basis. I’m sure there are some smartphone apps that can help with this, but then wouldn’t that mean you are taking even more time (that you say you don’t have) to track one down, learn it, test it out…you get my drift.
Ok, if you truly did this step, we’ve got a clear picture on where you are spending the time that we all have an equal amount of. In our next post, I’ll tell you how to find small inefficiencies that can make a massive difference in your productivity.
