The Open Experience…2/4/15

I’ve written a number of posts over the past few years to stir up people’s motivation to sign up for the CrossFit Open. But this year, I want to leave it up to your other coaches to provide the inspiration to help get you guys involved. However, if you still want to kill some time and read my blathering, here are links to a few past blogs:

“The Open Experience”

Let me take you on a trip down memory lane to the 2014 CrossFit Open. At that point I was fresh out of Foundations with 8 weeks of CrossFit under my belt. Josh spoke about a competition called the Open, encouraging everyone to sign up. I got the app and signed up. What followed was an experience that opened my eyes to what CrossFit is all about.

One of the workouts of the Open had two movements; Overhead squats and chest to bar pull ups. All I thought was, “What the heck is a chest to bar pull up!?”
I found out.
That Saturday was challenging, humbling, and invigorating. The emotions in the CFG warehouse were palpable. I learned something new about CrossFit, myself, and other athletes at CFG. It was hard and we were all going to show up again the next Saturday to give it another shot.
Fast forward to the last workout, 14.5. Now we’re in the brand new facility but we brought all the same emotions. This WOD was made up of thrusters and burpees over the bar. Lots of heart, soul, and sweat were laid out in the new gym.

My thoughts after my first competition were that I can be better and I will be.

We all do CrossFit for different reasons whether it be for the community, improve health & fitness, or to be the best versions of ourselves. We also do it because we can measure our progress; we can see our success.
Sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to see if you really are getting better. CFG is our home. We are comfortable competing with our friends but I was ready to see how it felt to step out against other athletes…I wanted to test myself like we all did during the Open.
Two scaled and two RX competitions later I still have the same thought as I did after the 2014 Open –

I can be better and I will be.

Now that the 2015 CrossFit Open is approaching, it’s time to measure progress. Not like how we measure it on Wodify with our CFG family but against all the other CrossFit athletes around the world and in workouts that aren’t programmed by Josh.
It’s exciting and scary and challenging and it’s worth it.
You will learn your strengths, weaknesses, and can make a plan to be better.
Step out of your comfort zone and compete in the Open.
Not just to see how you compare to others but to see how you compare to yourself.
